Introduction to the CMS

The Content Management System (CMS) add-on allows you to add pages of your own content to a myClubhouse site. This article introduces the basic concepts and capabilities of the CMS system.

Spaces

The myClubhouse CMS is divided into Spaces:

  • Each Space can contain any number of pages.

  • Each Space has its own set of entitlements controlling who can view, create, edit, publish, comment etc. on pages in the space.

  • Each Space has a short code which is used to construct the URL to pages in the space.

  • Each page in a single Space must have a different title.

Editing Workflow

Each page has a lightweight edit-and-publish workflow. When you edit a page, you can save it as a draft meaning that it will not be visible to the majority of users. Only those with edit permissions on the space would be able to see draft versions of pages. Once you are happy with the draft, you can publish the page. Editing after this point will create a new draft. This workflow allows administrators to collaborate on pages before publication. Each page maintains a historical list of the previously published versions. You can choose to delete previous versions of a page as and when necessary. There is a separate Publish entitlement from the Edit entitlement which allows edits to be made by a group of users before final sign-off and publication by a separate (more senior) person.

Structure of Pages

Each page in the CMS is constructed of a number of blocks which are stacked on top of each other to form the page. Each block can be divided horizontally into up to twelve columns. The width of each column is defined in 1/12ths of the total available width. So the width of a column can be: 1/12, 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 5/12, 1/2, 7/12, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6 or the entire width.

Each block can have a background which can be either a solid colour or an image.

Each block can either be the full width of the browser or constrained to a fixed width which does not alter regardless of how wide the browser is. A third option is to have a full-width background with constrained-width content on top.

Margins

You can define a margin of any width which will be placed between each of the columns in a block. You can also define a margin at the bottom of each block.

Content of Block Columns

Each column in a block can contain one of the following:

  • An image

  • A formatted block of text (which can include embedded images, video, attachments etc.)

  • A widget

Images and Backgrounds

Backgrounds can be defined for blocks and individual columns. Background can be images or solid colours. There are controls that can apply some basic effects to images; these allow you to set the contrast, brightness, saturation, blur etc. of the image and also to apply a colour tint on top of the image.

Widgets

Widgets are data-driven content elements. There are a number of different widgets available and we are adding to this list all the time:

  • Event List - a customisable list of events.

  • Member List - displays the members in a Member List, either in a card or table layout.

  • Blog Feed - a news feed for a myClubhouse blog (requires the Blogs & Forums add-on).

  • Advert - a clickable image. If you have the Site Analytics add-on then this feeds click statistics to Google Analytics.

  • Twitter Feed - a configurable twitter feed.

  • Carousel - the image carousel.
